By looking out for the nuances of black curly hair and mastering the art of a multicultural hair care routine, you too can preserve the moisture and sheen of your natural hair.

Go through our hair care tips to help you keep your hair beautiful and healthy.

Stop Using a Brush!

One of the worst things you can do to your multiracial hair is to brush out the natural curls. Unless you don’t have any natural kinks in your hair, throw out your hairbrush! Brushing your hair while it’s dry can do the opposite of untangling any knots. It can actually cause the hair to become rougher and coarser. Always make sure you’re combing your hair with a wide-toothed comb while they’re wet.

Condition, Condition, and Condition

If you have multicultural hair, a good conditioner will be your best friend. You should be using some form of conditioner on your hair. Whether it’s a deep conditioner, a moisturizing conditioner, or a leave-in conditioner; using a combination of some or all of these will retain moisture. Make sure you’re combing through your hair before you rinse out the conditioner. We also recommend deep conditioning your hair on a weekly basis.

Choose an Oil That Works for Your Hair

You may have come across the LCO or the LOC method. The Liquid-Conditioner-Oil or Liquid-Oil-Conditioner is a layering method to seal in all the moisture in the hair. But keep in mind that all kinds of oil may not work for all multicultural hair; you need to find the one that works for your hair. For example, coconut oil can actually dry out mix-race hair. But fortunately, there are a ton of other alternatives, such as macadamia oil, castor oil, and almond oil to name a few.

Tie Your Hair in a Protective Hair Style

Keeping your hair in a protective hairstyle, especially while you’re sleeping, swimming, etc. will ensure further softness and reduce coarseness and breakage. Tying your hair in braids or cornrows will prevent any knots and will keep your hair healthy.

Never Overwash Your Hair!

Multicultural hair has different needs than other hair. Washing it every day will make it super dry and rough. Washing once per week with a nourishing shampoo on the roots will help preserve the natural texture of the hair. In fact, there’s an entire group on Facebook dedicated to the Curly Girl Method! The method includes co-washing hair only with conditioner and no shampoo! Figure out what works for you and don’t be afraid of trying something a little different.
